I’m back! What has it been… three, four weeks? Well first there was Christmas and then my computer bit the dust. But now, despite all the cyberdrama I’m plugged in and online again.
And I’ve got about five days to finish up my manuscript to prepare it for submission. Everything looks good, the story’s in place, the character’s are solid, the flow feels right. I even have an opportunity to attend a seminar where the editor who wants to see my work will be the main speaker! The excitement is definitely building.
Of course. There’s always a but. I’m starting to realize you never truely finish a story. My ‘but’ is I think my book is too short. It used to be a book about 12 year olds for 12 year olds and sat at a cozy word count of about 40,000. (I think that’s about 160 pages and right on track for the market). BUT. During my rewrites my characters have aged and the content has grown a little more riske. I’m now sitting on a manuscript 200 pages long for 15-16 year olds.
Still don’t see the problem? Check out the young adult section at Chapters next time you go. I swear, Harry potter started it and now all books seem eager to top one another in sheer volume. They’re HUGE.
Oh well. Something to munch on. I’m already drawing up the ‘extended version’ in my head. On the other hand, I know the time for submitting my manuscript has come.
